What Are Dental Veneers?

The purpose of a veneer is to cover the front of a tooth in order to hide any number of aesthetic dental flaws. Each veneer is very thin and is made out of a tooth-colored material such as porcelain. Before your veneers are placed on your teeth, they will be carefully customized in order to ensure that they look as natural as possible. Once on the teeth, you can expect your veneers to last for a very long time thanks to their high durability.

The Process of Getting Veneers

Placing a single veneer on a prepared tooth

At your first appointment for veneers, a small amount of enamel will be removed from your teeth. Once that is done, we’ll capture the necessary impressions of your mouth. Afterward, temporary veneers will be placed on your prepared teeth in order to protect them; in the meantime, the impressions will be sent to a dental lab so that the process of designing and creating your permanent veneers can begin.

Once the final veneers are ready, you’ll return to our office for a second appointment. The temporary veneers will be removed and replaced with the permanent versions. We’ll double-check to make sure that the veneers fit as they should, and we’ll make any adjustments that might be needed to put the finishing touches on your new smile.

The Benefits of Veneers

Veneers are an excellent choice for patients who want to make multiple changes to their smiles simultaneously. The treatment is relatively quick, generally only requiring two appointments. It’s also minimally invasive since the amount of enamel that needs to be removed from the teeth is very small. And as long as you take good care of your veneers, they can potentially last for 10 years or even longer.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

Naturally, the number of veneers required to make the desired changes to your smile will affect the amount you need to pay for the treatment. In general, veneers tend to be more costly than other forms of cosmetic dentistry, but their versatility and longer lifespan can make them well worth the investment. Don’t be afraid to ask about options for making veneers more affordable, such as CareCredit financing.

Veneer FAQs

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

If you’ve heard veneers referred to as “instant orthodontics,” you might be wondering if they can fix crooked teeth. While they can’t move your teeth, they can quickly conceal certain types of misalignment, including teeth that are slightly rotated out of position. The easiest way to find out if this is the best cosmetic dental treatment for you is by scheduling a consultation at our Little Elm dental office!

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers are long-lasting, but they aren’t permanent. The misconception that they are often stems from the fact that the procedure is irreversible. As a result, your teeth will always need to be covered with veneers or dental crowns moving forward.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

Like your natural teeth, your veneers aren’t indestructible. That’s why we recommend avoiding certain foods, like raw almonds, hard candies, and peanut brittle. Sticky snacks, like caramel and taffy, can also shorten their lifespan, so it’s a good idea to eliminate them from your diet as well. To put it simply, you should focus on filling your plate with foods that are packed with nutrients, softer in consistency, and benefit your oral health, like oatmeal, plain yogurt, and cottage cheese.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

You will! Just make sure that you use a straw to help prevent discoloration from arising. If you can, rinse your mouth with clean water when you’re done and, about 20 minutes later, brush your teeth too. Habits like these may seem inconsequential, but they can make a big difference when it comes to maintaining your bright, beautiful smile.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

That depends entirely on the dental imperfections you’d like to address and how subtle or dramatic you want the final result to be. For example, if you are looking to subtly improve your smile by fixing a noticeable chip, you may only need one veneer. If, on the other hand, you want to address stains and gaps on all of the teeth that show when you smile, we may recommend 10 or 12.

Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?

Although veneers are suitable for a wide range of patients, there are some cases where we don’t recommend them. For instance, veneers are not recommended for patients with bruxism because chronic teeth grinding and clenching have been linked to a higher risk of debonding. That’s why the initial consultation is so important! At your visit, our cosmetic dentist will review your dental history, conduct a comprehensive oral exam, and determine if veneers are the best smile-enhancing treatment for you.
