When you first get dentures, you might be excited to finally have your full smile back. You might be eager to have them in, and once you’re fully adjusted to them, you enjoy how comfortable they are. They were designed to fit perfectly in your mouth after all. But you may be tempted to keep them in 24/7 to revel in the confidence they bring. However, here are three reasons why this isn’t the best for your smile.
1.) More Prone to Gum Disease
In order to properly clean your dentures, you will need to clean all sides of them. That includes the parts that sit against your gums. However, when you keep them in, then bacteria can build up easily in these areas. They will be more likely to attack your gums, which can lead to an infection.
Not only that, but the snug fit can also cause problems when worn all day and night. While it helps you bite, it reduces circulation to the soft tissues in your mouth. Thankfully, this isn’t really a problem when you remove them while you sleep, but if not, then you may be preventing minerals and vitamins from being delivered.
2.) Higher Risk of Developing Denture Stomatitis
Going off the point above, plaque buildup can also lead to denture stomatitis. This is a type of thrush that causes discomfort, a burning sensation, inflammation, and noticeable redness. Your immune system may also become weakened, so your body will have more trouble fighting off infection. The fit of your prosthetic can also be affected by inflamed gums!
By simply taking out your prosthetic during the night and giving it a proper cleaning, you can avoid this oral health issue.
3.) Increased Jawbone Loss
Missing teeth can lead to jawbone loss when left untreated, as the bone isn’t getting any stimulation. Your body will absorb the minerals to use elsewhere, but dentures help slow this down. They apply a bit of pressure on the soft tissues, which get sent down to your jaw. This can become bad news when you don’t take your restoration out. The constant friction can weaken your jawbone, increasing slippage or discomfort.
In the end, you should build a habit of taking off your dentures at night. You will be able to keep them in great shape for longer; that way, you can enjoy your full smile without any worries.
