What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is an oral appliance that replaces lost teeth. As such, it consists of varied materials fused to either side of a “pontic” (i.e., an artificial tooth). This design allows a bridge to restore anywhere from one to four missing (and neighboring) teeth.
Overall, the best candidates for dental bridges lack adjacent teeth. Such people can have their smiles restored with just one treatment; they usually don’t need follow-up care. Aside from that point, a patient only needs decent oral health to qualify.
Types of Dental Bridges

You’ll first consult Dr. V before you undergo any restoration work. At that time, she’ll check your smile and confirm whether a bridge could help you; she’ll then draft a custom treatment plan if so.
Based on the exam findings, we’ll suggest (if any) one of two types of dental bridges for you. These two kinds are the following:
Traditional Dental Bridge

A traditional dental bridge is the kind that has existed the longest. In general, it uses two (or more) dental crowns fused to either side of an artificial tooth. The device thus relies on nearby natural teeth – “abutments” – to remain stable.
As it doesn’t cost much, a traditional bridge is ideal for patients with smaller budgets. Just note that this type alters nearby teeth for the placement process.
Implant Bridge

An implant bridge doesn’t use abutments as the regular kind does. Instead, it secures itself with dental implants – small titanium posts that fuse with your jaw once placed. This bridge should thus remain highly stable over time, remaining functional for a few decades or more.
While an implant bridge doesn’t alter existing teeth, it does cost more. Please note that as you consider your options.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

By getting a dental bridge from Parklane Family Dentistry, you’d enjoy benefits like:
- Outstanding Looks – Dental bridges use porcelain (or similar tooth-colored materials), so they blend seamlessly with your whole smile.
- Great Oral Health – As it fills your grin’s gaps, a dental bridge reduces the presence of harmful bacteria in your mouth. The device can also keep your other teeth from tilting.
- Much Easier Eating – A quality dental bridge helps you chew a broader range of foods than you could before.
- Long-Lasting Effects – The average dental bridge lasts roughly 5-15 years, and well-maintained ones can work for 20+ years.
